WebP was developed by Google in 2010 based on technology acquired from their purchase of On2 Technologies. The format was initially derived from the VP8 video codec!
PNG was created in 1995 as a free, open-source alternative to GIF after CompuServe introduced licensing fees. The name is a recursive acronym: "PNG's Not GIF"!
JPEG can achieve compression ratios of 10:1 with little perceptible loss in image quality. It's named after the Joint Photographic Experts Group that created it.
The GIF format is from 1987 - older than many web developers! It was one of the first widely supported image formats on the web and is still popular for animations.
